Jakob Bach führt 1916 als Deutschlehrer ein traditionsverhaftetes und vom Rhythmus der Natur bestimmtes Leben in dem Dorf Gnadental an der Wolga. Doch damit ist es vorbei, als er sich in die reiche Bauerntochter Klara verliebt und als 1917 die russische Revolution ausbricht.
